In recent decades, the phenomenon known collectively as anime has captured the imaginations of young people throughout America and the world. This Japanese form of cartoon animation, often nicknamed "Japanimation," has a singular, distinctive style which can be addicting to watch and listen to, if one is not careful. Many anime cartoons have very complex plots with not-so-innocent themes that would actually be better understood by adults and older teens - a good number of whom comprise the total anime fan base.

Cartoon Network has, for a while now, been America's primary cartoon venue, including in its daily schedule many of the biggest cartoon shows, including anime series. Among these is a fairly new, but already wildly popular, series known as Naruto.

Naruto tells the story of a flamboyant, ambitious young ninja warrior on a continuous quest for fame and prestige. Naruto is not just a cartoon show, but also what is called a Manga series. These, very simply put, are Japanese comics. Many anime shows have their own comics series to supplement them. In fact, the Naruto comics series, by Masashi Kishimoto, first appeared in Japan in November 1999, about three years before it became a cartoon show. Naruto premiered in the United States, on Cartoon Network on September 10, 2005, and has been a continuing success among audiences in 18 different countries. Anyone interested in viewing the Naruto comics as well as the series can find detailed chapter downloads at NarutoFan.com.

Part of Naruto's appeal to audiences lies within its young ninja protagonist, who, although at times ridiculous, is a character for whom viewers can have some sympathy. In fact, many anime cartoons have highly sympathetic characters with deeply felt emotions and complex traits. In their own way, these personalities often have a drama akin to soap operas. Naruto has its own cast of characters, each having his or her own age, background, height, weight, place of origin and even blood type. Most of them are male, though there are a couple who are female, and at least one who is an animal; in this case, a dog.

Because the comics preceded the animated series, the creators of Naruto designed the show so that each episode covered two chapters of the comics. However, to keep the comics ahead of the show, new plots and material were added exclusively to what they call "filler" episodes. The "fillers" detail the lives of many of the lesser-known secondary characters.

Downloads are available for many features of the series. These downloads are not only the comics, but also the music, artbook and the show itself. These downloads can be found at NarutoFan.com; the anime download link automatically connects to animePLUS!, with a long list of episodes. The episodes are organized by number, season and original airing date.
Those new to the series may wish to view an episode guide. The official site of Cartoon Network has a Naruto episode guide extending all the way to Episode 101. The site also displays the airing schedule and a character description guide.

Naruto is enjoying widespread fame at the moment; however, anime cartoons have so many ardent fans the total numbers of anime series introduced are difficult to estimate. Fans of Naruto may also enjoy other animes, as well as their accompanying comics. But now every anime has reach quite the same level of success of Naruto.
