As with many popular television shows, the hit anime program Naruto made its Japanese motion picture premiere in August 2004. Naruto The Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow would not be available to the American fans until three years later, by which time the Japanese had already produced two more Naruto films. These films were all such smash hits in both theatres and DVD sales that in August of 2007, the fourth one premiered in Japanese theatres. No date has been set for release in any other countries.

The mass appeal of Naruto may be in the characters, plot, animation, soundtrack or a combination of all four. The important thing here is it attracts such a wide array of fans. An estimated 13 million people flocked to Japanese theatres in the summer of August 2004 to see their hero Naruto on the big screen. Thanks to Cartoon Network, fans in America could not wait to see the feature length film hit their shores. Could the plot live up to the hype?

The first Naruto film takes place in the Snow Country, a previously unheard of land in the series. It is up to Naruto's team to lead a popular and selfish actress to the Snow Country in order to film a new movie, the last in an adventure series. She refuses at first and receives a cruel reception upon entering the Snow Country once she is persuaded to go. The main characters' enemies attack Naruto's team and the actress, and lead to a connection between their plight and a missing girl from a previous decade.

As history shows, the Naruto film was successful. It was followed by Naruto the Movie 2: The Illusionary Ruins at the Depths of the Earth and Naruto the Movie 3: The Animal Riot of Crescent Moon Island. The second film takes place in "enigmatic historical ruins...in the depths of the Earth." The third film finds the personae returning a prince back to his home in Moon Country with a menagerie of animals be purchases along the way. Naruto: Shippuuden the Movie, only just recently released in Japan, is surrounded by rumors that Naruto dies. The diverse plots in the films keeps fans returning for more.

From all aspects, it is no wonder people keep returning for more in the Naruto chronicles. Since it is based on the manga series, there is always more story to be told. Luckily fans in the US have the DVDs and soundtracks from the prior films to tide them over until the wait for the next installment reaches the West. Those in Japan can rest easy knowing whether or not Naruto survives his latest adventure on the big screen.
