Although his grandfather expected the townspeople to respect Naruto, this was not the case. Instead, they ignored Naruto and treated the orphan cruelly. Because of this, Naruto became a trickster to cope with his suffering. The rest of the series focuses on Naruto growing up and learning to be a powerful ninja.
